Why We Chose Certified Humane®


Certified Humane® is the leading certification for humane animal handling and raising. Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a non-profit organization with strict standards for the treatment of farm animals. Working with Adele Douglass, the CEO and Executive Director of HFAC, and her team, the Aspen Ridge® program earned the Certified Humane® label in June of 2011 and has continued to fulfill the requirements since.

“Not many Natural beef brands meet our certification requirements because traceability is required at all stages,” Douglass said. “JBS’s Aspen Ridge program was able to comply in humane practices from birth to slaughter as well as provide traceability throughout the process.”

We chose to seek and maintain the Certified Humane® label from HFAC, not only to raise a better product, but also because it’s the right thing to do. It is currently the only certification that requires a humane animal handling process from birth through slaughter.

More specifically, Certified Humane® means:

  • Animals have ample space, shelter and gentle handling to limit stress.
  • The use of growth hormones, antibiotics and animal by-products are prohibited.
  • Producers must comply with food safety and environmental regulations.
  • The slaughter standards must meet the AMI Guidelines written by Dr. Temple Grandin, a member of the HFAC Scientific Committee.
